Gastrointestinal stromal tumor

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor is the term used for tumors located in the gastrointestinal tract. These tumors manifest from the mutation of a gene called CKIT. Some cases of gastrointestinal stromal tumor are a side effect of abdominal radiation therapy. Most gastrointestinal stromal tumors develop in the stomach and usually affect people over the age of 50. Symptoms may vary depending on the location and the level of development of the tumor. Symptoms include bleeding and dyspepsia. Endoscopy is done to diagnose the presence of gastrointestinal stromal tumor. Surgery is required to remove the tumors.
