Dry mucous membranes. Mucous membranes line all the body passages that communicate with the air. This includes the respiratory, digestive and urigenital tracts. Mucous membranes are moist due to the presence of glands that secrete mucus (a thick fluid). A well known mucuous membrane is the interior of the nose.
